LG Fridge Not Cooling? 6 Causes Dubai Residents Need to Know
A fridge that stops cooling is one of the most urgent appliance problems a Dubai household can face. With ambient temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C in summer, food spoilage can happen within hours. If your LG refrigerator is running but not cooling — or not cooling consistently — here are the six most likely causes and what to do about each.
6 Reasons Your LG Fridge May Not Be Cooling
1. Dirty or Blocked Condenser Coils
The condenser coils at the back or underneath your LG fridge release heat from the refrigeration system into the surrounding air. When they become coated in dust and lint, they cannot dissipate heat efficiently — the whole system runs hot and cooling performance drops.
DIY fix: Unplug the fridge, pull it away from the wall, and vacuum the condenser coils with a brush attachment. In Dubai’s dusty environment, this should be done every 3–4 months.
2. Faulty Evaporator Fan Motor
The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the freezer compartment into the fridge section. If this fan motor fails, the freezer may still be cold but the fridge section will warm up significantly.
How to check: Open the freezer door — you should be able to hear and feel the fan running. If you hear nothing, or if the fan is running erratically, the motor needs to be replaced.
3. Defrost System Failure (Frost Buildup)
LG frost-free fridges have an automatic defrost system that melts frost buildup on the evaporator coils every 8–12 hours. When the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer fails, frost accumulates until it completely blocks the evaporator — and the fridge stops cooling entirely.
Sign to watch: If you notice frost buildup visible in the freezer, or if the back wall of the freezer is covered in a thick layer of ice, the defrost system has likely failed.
4. Faulty Door Seals (Gaskets)
The rubber seals around the fridge and freezer doors keep warm air out and cold air in. In Dubai’s humid summer months, door seals can become sticky, crack, or warp — allowing a constant infiltration of warm air that forces the compressor to run continuously.
Quick test: Close the door on a piece of paper. If you can pull the paper out without resistance, the seal has failed and needs replacement. Door seal replacement is one of the most cost-effective fridge repairs available.
5. Low Refrigerant (Gas Leak)
Refrigerant is the substance that carries heat out of the fridge. If the refrigerant circuit develops a leak, cooling capacity drops steadily until the fridge cannot maintain safe temperatures at all.
Signs of a gas leak: The compressor runs continuously, the fridge is warm even on maximum settings, and there may be an oily residue near the compressor at the back of the unit.
Refrigerant top-up and leak repair must be performed by a certified technician — it is not a DIY task.
6. Compressor Failure
The compressor is the heart of the refrigeration system. It pumps refrigerant through the coils and is what makes the characteristic hum of a running fridge. A failed compressor means no cooling at all.
Compressor replacement is the most expensive single repair on a fridge, typically costing between AED 400–800. For newer LG models (under 8 years), replacement is worthwhile. For older units, our technicians will advise honestly on whether replacement makes better financial sense.
What About LG’s Inverter Compressor?
Many LG fridges sold in the UAE feature LG’s Linear or Inverter compressor technology, which is far more energy efficient and longer-lasting than conventional compressors. LG offers an extended warranty on these compressors in many markets. If your fridge is still within its compressor warranty period, contact us and we will advise on the correct process.
How Dubai’s Climate Affects LG Fridges
Placing your fridge near a window, in direct sunlight, or in an unventilated space forces the compressor to work significantly harder — especially in summer. Ensure your fridge has at least 5 cm of clearance on all sides and is not exposed to direct heat sources. The recommended ambient operating temperature for most LG fridges is 10°C to 43°C — well within Dubai’s indoor range, but only if the fridge is not in a hot garage or utility room with poor ventilation.
